Sustainable
management of coral reef fishery and ecosystems should
be initiated at the countries of origin.

The
success of sustainable management of coral reef fishery
and ecosystem requires active participation of both
fishing communities and the general public as well as
co-operation from international and regional communities.

The
Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department of
Hong Kong organized an APEC workshop in Hong Kong in
December 1997 to address the issue of destructive fishing
in Asia Pacific Region.

set of recommendations was formulated in the Workshop
to address the issue. These recommendations were supported
by the APEC Oceans Conference and were accepted by APEC
Marine Resources Conservation Working Group and Fisheries
Working Group. |
