Reference

Taxonomic studies were severely hampered by the paucity of literature relevant to locally occurring species. In the early years, taxonomic studies were highly relied on fish references of the nearby waters, e.g. Fishes of the South China Sea. However, HKFRS had contributed a series of publications between 1950s and 70s, which serve as the essential and indispensable tool for studying fishes in this region. The most important publication would be the "Marine fishes of Hong Kong Part " by W. L. Chan in 1968, which covered 71 species of commercial important fishes. Academic researchers have also contributed a lot of publications, the most important ones are: Marine fish fauna in Hong Kong waters (Ni and Kwok, 1999) and Reef Fishes of Hong Kong (Sadovy and Cornish, 2000). Selected literatures related to the fishes of Hong Kong and adjacent waters are attached for viewers' reference.
